Insomnia and Depression: Online Insomnia Therapies Reduce Depression!

An UK study published in 2016 found that an online therapy program for insomnia also reduced symptoms of depression. Previous studies had already proven the effectiveness of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (CBT) against insomnia and the symptoms that accompany it. With an online program, there is immense hope for greater access to these therapies!

It is on the basis of this observation that Australian researchers from the Black Dog Institute, the University of New South Wales and the Australian National University, led by Prof. Helen Christensen, carried out their study. The investigation sought to determine whether depression could be reduced across the board by treating insomnia using an online CBT program or cognitive behavioral therapy.

The survey: methods and results on insomnia and depression in patients
The researchers studied a population of 1,149 Internet users between the ages of 18 and 64, who simultaneously suffered from insomnia and symptoms of depression. 
People without reliable web access, patients with schizophrenia, psychosis or bipolar disorder, pregnant women, and night and shift workers were excluded from participating in the survey.

These Internet users were randomly assigned 2 programs to follow on the Internet:

Shuti: English language CBT insomnia program
HealthWatch: English interactive health program
The participants were checked twice:

after 6 weeks: 71% of people who completed the online CBT program no longer had symptoms of depression . Against 42% for those who followed the interactive health program.
After 6 months, 73% of people who pursued CBT online for insomnia no longer had depression . Against 52% of people in the control group.

Study Conclusion: Online CBT For Insomnia Is Effective In Reducing Depression
The results indicated above are therefore very conclusive. The authors of the study conclude with this interpretation:

“Online cognitive behavioral therapy for the treatment of insomnia is a practical and effective way to reduce symptoms of depression and may be able to reduce depression at the population level through the use of a fully automated system with all the potential for wide distribution. "


Online CBT programs: a guarantee of success and greater access for all
Previous studies had demonstrated the effectiveness of behavioral and cognitive therapy in treating insomnia  and sleep disorders . So much so that has also recommends this brief and less expensive therapy as a first-line treatment for adults with insomnia .

A very recent American study, carried out by the American College of Physicians, has just reached the same conclusion, by analyzing all the studies published on insomnia in 2016: CBT as a first-line treatment .

A 2013 US-Canadian study showed that 95% of people in an online CBT program saw improved sleep and reduced anxiety and depression . By emphasizing that the Internet made it possible to expand and facilitate access to this therapy.
