Qatar Airways Covid-19 Test Requirement | Policy | Rules

  • Qatar Airways has said that passengers on its flights from Zimbabwe and South Africa will be denied boarding "with immediate effect."
  • The decision follows the World Health Organization's designation of the novel COVID-19 Omicron variant as a "variant of concern."

Qatar Airways, based in Doha, said on Friday that travelers from South Africa and Zimbabwe will be denied boarding.

"Passengers booked on Qatar Airways flights from any country, including Johannesburg (JNB), Cape Town (CPT), Durban (DUR), and Harare (HRE), will be denied passage until further notice," Qatar said.

A Qatar flight due to depart Johannesburg for Doha at 9:35 p.m. on Friday took off at 1:00 a.m. local time, according to information. Insider's request for comment on the delayed flight was not immediately responded to by Qatar.

The airline confirmed on its website that it will continue to fly customers to South Africa and Zimbabwe "in accordance with existing limitations."

According to the Ministry of Public Health, Zimbabwe and South Africa were added to Qatar's list of "Exceptional Red List Countries" on Friday, although the government still allows vaccinated travelers from both countries to enter with a 2-day quarantine.

The decision comes in the wake of the World Health Organization's growing fear that the new COVID-19 form is more dangerous.

The WHO designated the Omicron version, B.1.1.529, as a "variant of concern" on Friday, and nations such as the United States, United Kingdom, and the Netherlands are combating the mutated virus with a strict restriction on travelers from South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland. The variation was discovered by South African researchers on November 9 and reported to the WHO on November 24.

"Preliminary data shows a higher risk of reinfection with this variation as compared to other variants of concern," the WHO stated on Friday.

Earlier Friday, both the airline and the airport reported that two KLM planes from Cape Town and Johannesburg heading for Amsterdam were not permitted to deplane after landing. Passengers were ultimately permitted to exit the plane and were shuttled to an obligatory COVID-19 test.
