Sights, Sounds, and other Sensations

Manila refers to two separate but integrated entities: the city of origin that is the capital of the Philippines, and the metro area that bears that city's name. Metro Manila is home to 15 to 20 million people. It is the cultural, educational, entertainment, business, the spiritual, and political capital of the Philippines.

It is also home to the regional head offices of several multinational companies, non-governmental organizations, and branches of the United Nations. Those with flights to Manila will find themselves in a cosmopolitan city that has all the amenities of modern living while staying true to the hospitable nature of Filipinos.

Manila is a city that never sleeps. While the streets in the morning are filled with the hustle and bustle of a modern city, in the evening and even the early hours of the morning the same streets are still full of people enjoying the nightlife. Malls – Bars and restaurants can be found everywhere in Metro Manila – including some of the largest in the region. For those with more cultured tastes, museums, theaters, and concert halls abound as well, chief of which is the cultural center of the Philippines.

For a highly urbanized metropolis like Manila, it has large patches of green. Rizal Park, named after national hero Jose Rizal, is one of the largest and most accessible. Quezon City has a wildlife center with a lake right in the middle. Even malls try to incorporate park-like areas into their designs, such as those with upscale greenbelts in the Makati Central Business District.

Entrance To More Fun

The Philippines is home to many of the world's top vacation and adventure destinations, such as Boracay with its world-famous white-sand beaches, Baguio, the country's summer capital, and natural wonders such as Palawan's subterranean river. It is easy to reach these places from Manila.

The chocolate-colored hills and tarsier sanctuaries of Bohol, the waves of La Union, and the UNESCO heritage site of Batanes are all two hours from Manila. Davao, with its eagle sanctuary, pearl farm, and exotic durian or historic Cebu, is easily accessible from Manila's airports and seaports.

Many vacation spots are also available by car, van, or bus for those visiting Manila. Tagaytay, with a lake within its volcano or the mystic Mount Banahau, is just a few hours' drives from the metropolis. The former American hideouts of Clark and Subic, which now host a number of world-class hotels and recreational facilities, are two or three hours away by car.

These are some of the places you can visit in Manila. It's more fun in the Philippines, as they say, and with cheap flights to Manila, the fun is more accessible than ever.
